5 Benefits of Tanning

With summer in full swing, there’s no better time than now to work on your tan. Maybe you work long days in an office, or perhaps you just haven’t been able to spend as much time in the sun as you would like. Whatever the case may be, spending time in a tanning bed is the ideal way to maintain a beautiful bronze and look your best throughout the summer. It’s also a great way to provide your body with a host of other benefits, and in today’s post, we’re going to take an in-depth look at a few tanning benefits that you may not have heard.

When you’ve finished reading today’s post, come by Spunk Fitness to learn more about our state-of-the-art fitness facility in Newark! We’ve cut out the unnecessary features and amenities that make gyms so expensive, allowing you to get access to the equipment you need at a price you can afford.

The Benefits of Using Tanning Beds

VITAMIN D

Vitamin D is one of the most important vitamins you can give your body. Unfortunately, many Americans are deficient, and getting too little of this crucial vitamin can cause a host of problems. While bone strength is perhaps the most important role that vitamin D plays (more on this below), vitamin D deficiency has been linked to an increased risk of:

  • Type I diabetes
  • Muscular pain and inflammatory joint conditions
  • Breast, colon, prostate, ovary, and lymphatic system cancer
  • Death due to cardiovascular disease
  • Asthma
  • Cognitive problems in the elderly

If you aren’t able to get into the sunlight on a regular basis, then tanning can be a great second choice. Unlike vitamin D supplements, tanning provides your body with the exact amount it needs — studies show that many supplements contain far more vitamin D than the body can actually use.

OSTEOPOROSIS PREVENTION

Building off of the previous point, vitamin D is a crucial component of strong and healthy bones. It allows our bodies to utilize the calcium we consume, which in turn prevents osteoporosis from developing or worsening. As we mentioned in the previous point, if you aren’t able to get out into the sunlight on a regular basis, then spending some time in a tanning bed and getting plenty of calcium in your diet is a great second choice.

SEASONAL AFFECTIVE DISORDER THERAPY

Do you ever feel down or blue as the seasons change? Also known as SAD, seasonal affective disorder affects more than three million Americans every year. While the majority of cases occur during winter, SAD affects every individual differently. In addition to seeing a mental health specialist, exercising, and spending time with friends and family, light therapy has been shown to be an effective treatment for SAD. Regular exposure is important, so if you plan to use our tanning beds in conjunction with other treatments, then make sure that you visit our fitness center often!

ANTI-INFLAMMATORY EFFECTS

While we’ve listed this point last, it’s certainly not the least important. Sunlight has been shown to counteract chronic inflammation, and conditions such as psoriasis and eczema have been shown to respond positively to UV light. If you struggle with inflammation-related skin conditions, then speak with your doctor about whether or not tanning could help you combat the condition.

JET LAG TREATMENT

If you’ve returned from a trip and are having a difficult time sleeping, there’s no better way to reset your biological clock than by exposing yourself to UV light. Come by Spunk Fitness and use our tanning beds the next time you return from an international trip — your body will thank you!
